A 22-Year Analysis of the Society for Vascular Surgery Foundation Mentored Research Career Development Award in Fostering Vascular Surgeon-Scientists
Vascular surgeon scientists shape the future of our specialty through rigorous scientific investigation and innovation in clinical care as well as train the next generation of surgeon-scientists. The Society for Vascular Surgery Foundation (SVSF) supports the development of surgeon-scientists through the Mentored Research Career Development Award (SVSF-CDA) Program, providing supplemental funds to recipients of NIH K08/K23 grants. The legalization of off-label promotion: Vascular Solutions beat the FDA and what their victory means for medtech
Welcome to the Medsider interview series, a special new feature at MassDevice, which will appear regularly. All interviews are conducted by Scott Nelson, Founder of Medsider. We hope you enjoy them! For as long as I can remember, at every company meeting I’ve ever been to, the topic of off-label promotion is always covered.  Whether it was new-hire orientation, a national sales meeting, or some other large commercial event, the dissemination of off-label information was always presented as not only a fireable offense, but something that could get you thrown in jail.  C.R. Bard, Boston Scientific, Covidien, Medtronic...

Vascular Cures Wylie Scholar Program
Vascular Cures' Wylie Scholar Program provides financial assistance to outstanding surgeons at the early stage of their careers, to help them develop as academic vascular surgeon-scientists. Vascular Cures has advanced breakthrough research since 1982. We've established a group of 16 surgeon-scientists at 13 institutions around the country who are transforming patient care. Vascular Cures' initial research investment of $8 million has enabled another $42 million in funding —producing $50 million for research. The Wylie Scholar Program has created a network of talented academic surgeons, many of who...

Regulation of the pulmonary vascular tone by p66shc and cyclophilin D
Mitochondria regulate intracellular calcium homeostasis and thereby may affect pulmonary vascular functions, in particular the response of the pulmonary vasculature to hypoxia. We investigated whether the proteins p66shc and cyclophilin D (CypD), which regulate release of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species and apoptosis, may influence pulmonary vascular functions. Mice deficient for p66shc (p66shc–/-), CypD (CypD–/-), or both proteins (p66shc/CypD–/-) exhibited a lower pulmonary vascular resistance compared to wildtype (WT) mice determined in vivo by hemodynamic measurements and in isolated lungs. Syst...

FDA grants de novo clearance to Avenu Medical for Ellipsys vascular access system
Vascular access system maker Avenu Medical said today it won FDA de novo clearance for its Ellipsys vascular access system designed for use with end-stage renal disease patients who require hemodialysis. The San Juan Capistrano, Calif.-based company touted that its Ellipsys EndoAVF technology acts as an alternative to traditional AV fistula creation. The system, which can be used under local or regional anesthesia, uses an ultrasound-guided catheter that delivers a small amount of thermal energy to fuse a permanent anastomosis between the vein and artery to create an AVF. “Using the Ellipsys vascular access system ...

Vascular sexual dimorphism and pulmonary hypertension in a rat chronic hypoxia model
In this study we have investigated whether a possible sexual dimorphism in the progression of PAH could be due to differences in the vascular resistance or the availability of vasoactive agents, and their consequences on PAP.In female rats, exposure to 10% O2 environment for 2 weeks causes a faster progression of PAH (>30%; determined by right heart catheterization) and right ventricular hypertrophy (Fulton index >30%) respect to their male counterparts. Additionaly heart rate was significantly diminished by 40% in females. Contrary to these hemodynamic and cardiac results, the 10 µM carbachol-induced relaxatio...
